We have a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the 2.7 update. The following text and poll are direct from Beamdog and Julius: IE Mobile Save Location Options Poll Over the last five years, one of the biggest challenges for Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale players on mobile has been the inability to properly mod the games, edit or transfer save files, or even add custom portraits. Frequent Android restrictions and OS updates have made these tasks increasingly difficult. With update 2.7, Beamdog aims to finally address this problem. Because recent versions of iOS and Android have changed how apps can access device storage, we need to update the way the Infinity Engine games handle save data. Our goal for 2.7 is to move away from app‑specific hidden directories and instead make save files directly accessible to players, enabling easier modding, importing/exporting, and customization across devices. Please vote. We need to gather the party community feedback before venturing forth. For the options below: The “Old Location” is mostly inaccessible to the end user on their device, outside of the game itself. The “New Location” will be a directory that is accessible to both the game and users on the device.
Option
- New Location For New Installs Only Existing game installs will continue to use the Old Location and will function as it did before. New game installations will use the New Location for save games. This does not provide a way for existing installs to access save games outside of the game, but this does ensure that new installs will have their save games accessible.
Option
- Migration From Old to New Starting with the 2.7 update, the IE games will attempt to migrate save games from the Old Location to the New Location. Errors during this migration process may be difficult to communicate due to device and game limitations. If there is a fundamental issue with storage on the device, the user may experience these errors each time they launch the game. When successful, all save games will be usable from the New Location and accessible outside of the game.
Option
- Read from Old Location, Save to New Location This option involves leaving the existing save games in the Old Location while storing new saves in the New Location. All new saves will be accessible outside of the game, whereas the existing saves will not. That said, simply loading an existing save and re-saving it will make the save game accessible from the New Location.
